JeepClub Events
JeepClub aim to cater for all levels from the beginner or 'newbie' in a road standard Jeep to those of great experience with modified vehicles. For the needs of those new to Jeep ownership we can give professional advice, tuition and support. Our events are beginner friendly and even at our rare hardcore off-roading activities or competitions we try to always make provision for 'Newbies'. Although our expertise centres around late-model Jeep vehicles - Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and Commander, we have members with models right back to the original WW2 MB and all are welcome to our events. In fact, you don't even need to own a Jeep to be a JeepClub Member. We promote a safe and responsible attitude to off-road driving and exert no pressure on our members to tackle obstacles they do not feel comfortable with. Help and advice is available at every step and the key to the concept is the informal atmosphere. As a service to members we also list events from other clubs and organisations. These may not be suitable for those in unmodified vehicles or with less experience - If anything listed here is not a JeepClub event please check with the organisers to see if it is suitable before booking.
1999 Archive
- Ox Drove - Sunday 17th January 1999
Our run along the Ox Drove Route led by Randall Paul, owner of the High Frontier 4x4 Park. We met at the Park at 10am, ready to leave at 11am.
- Ridgeway Recce - Saturday 6th February 1999
We had planned to use the Ridgeway to launch the Cherokee Club, however the local authorities had other ideas - the majority of the Ridgeway had a Voluntary Restraint posted, in force until the end of March. So, we decided to check a few local byways instead.
- Salisbury Laning - Saturday 27th February 1999
A small bunch of intrepid Wrangler owners ventured out onto Salisbury Plain to investigate a few new routes. They even had an Army escort (including helicopter gunship) for some of the journey.
- High Frontier Weekend - Saturday 6th March 1999
The first day of our High Frontier weekend resulted in a few minor dramas. But more on that later.
- High Frontier Weekend - Sunday 7th March 1999
After a very eventful Saturday at High Frontier, Sunday was looking a bit more relaxed.
- Salisbury Laning - Saturday 24th April 1999
As promised at the Cherokee launch, we arranged a day's green-laning in Salisbury as an easy introduction to the club's off-roading activities. Unfortunately, a lot of our new Cherokee members were busy on the 24th so we turned the day into a 'newbie' introduction day. So, two Wranglers, a Cherokee and a Grand Cherokee came out to lose their off-roading cherry.
- Cleeve Hill - Saturday 19th June 1999
A new site for us, Cleeve Hill, near Cheltenham, promised plenty of hills for us to practice our ascent & descent skills on. It also gave Alex a work-out having to run up and down the access slopes all day!
- The Ridgeway - Sunday 25th July 1999
Another run across the Ridgeway? Our aim was to make the most of what passes for summer while we still could. Someone was listening, as Sunday 25th July turned out to be a scorcher.
- Horsham - Sunday 8th August 1999
We'd arranged with the site owners to come down and check out the site for a future club event, but we combined this with a trip with a few of the Anoraks. Heavy rain in the morning and sun in the afternoon made for some problems finding traction.
- Tuff Terrains Weekend - Saturday 25th September 1999
Our first trip to Tuff Terrains, Llandrindod Wells, in deepest Wales, run by Bernie Pugh. As it turned out, it was to be the first of many.
- Tuff Terrains Weekend - Sunday 26th September 1999
The second day of our Tuff Terrains weekend saw the more adventurous Jeepers tested by Bernie...
- Minstead Manor - Saturday 23rd October 1999
People's one surviving memory of this event is how the wet the site was - although dry on the Wednesday when we rang the owner to confirm the details, since then we'd had three days of non-stop torrential rain. This took its inevitable toll on traction levels and consequently made things quite hard work.
- Broxhead Common - Saturday 20th November 1999
The Club's first trip to Broxhead Common (an MOD training site). We invited members of the Anoraks Off-Road and Chichester 4x4 Clubs to come along as well.
- Grand Canyon - Sunday 5th December 1999
What can I say? There's something about JeepClub and sunny weather... we just always seem to go together. Our end-of-year, chill-out special at the Grand Canyon site in Shoreham was treated to fantastic sunshine for the whole day.
